Italian Serie A Week 3 Preview - Novara vs Inter

Napoli, Juventus, Udinese and Cagliari look to continue their winning ways midweek. While manager Eddy Reja is sticking with Lazio after having his resignation refused by club president Claudio Lotito which means, start to the famed Italian managerial sack race is avoided if only temporarily.

Champions Milan will be looking to avoid back- to-back loss results when they welcome visitors Udinese to the San Siro Wednesday and with the current list of absentees including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Gennaro Gattuso, Kevin Prince Boateng and Massimo Ambrosini  things might just be touch and go.

After the opening two weeks Serie A is looking like a Wild West show with the big three of Milan, Inter and Roma stumbling at the gate.  But should their fans be concerned this early on?  I wouldn’t push the panic button just yet.  New Inter arrival Diego Forlan scored on his debut but give him time to better integrate into the squad. And what about Roma’s rejuvenated Daniele De Rossi playing with new intensity was a clear observation from their nil-nil draw against Inter last matchday.

Some heavy favorites are about to play so let us examine the first of Serie A mid-week fixtures.

Tuesday September 20/2011 Novara vs Inter (8:45 pm CET, 2:45 pm ET)

Tonight’s game will be the first time Novara and Inter have met in Serie A in 55 years and seven months, since 5 February 2021 and Inter are carrying out a pitch inspection at the Stadio Silvio Piola ahead of this evening’s match to better judge the playing surface made using the latest generation artificial turf.

After a challenging encounter away to Palermo which ended in a disastrous 4-3 loss, Inter’s defense surprisingly held up well in a 0-0 draw against Roma at the weekend. Still, not a major improvement, as the Nerazzurri continuously struggled to contain an ever-attacking Roma in the midfield just as hungry to grab all three points and first victory.

Clearly this was a contest of new arrival managers with Gian Piero Gasperini and Luis Enrique both trying to solidify their presence. Midfielders Wesley Sneijder, Ricardo Alvarez, Esteban Cambiasso, Joel Obi, Coutinho, and Sulley Muntari have all been called up for the match against Novara and perhaps the trot out of Muntari, not the most popular, as stormtrooper, will give Inter that dominance in the midfield they require.

Novara are relegation candidates working to fight against the drop all season having one point from two matches thus far.  Not sure if manager Attilio Tesser will employ park the bus tactics but give Inter space to maneuver and players like Wesley Sneijder will hurt you from any distance.

General Gasperini with the far superior squad at his disposal should win here comfortably anything less will surely spark a wildfire amongst tifosi and no doubt the evil eye from ownership.

Inter 3-0
