Spain 2-2 Morocco facing second round after Iran held Portugal 1-1 during their Monday’s final Group B match.

On Monday, Spain versus Morocco scrambled the 2-2 draw in an exciting finale to the Group B campaign, however Iago Aspas scored a VAR-assisted equalizer in injury time. After the intercession by the Video Assistant Referee, Aspas’s winner awarded, who initially prohibited, saw Spain stagger into the final 16 Group Winners.

Now, the Spaniards will be confronting World Cup hosts Russia in their second round, when Portugal was held by Iran to a 1-1 draw in other game. Spain suffered a real fright from a lively Morocco side leading 2-1 draw when the 90th minute started.

Herve Renard, a Morocco coach noted before his team started the game that the first to be eliminated this tournament was victim of the ‘total injustice’ of their opening 1-0 failure. Renard exclaimed that, “We would have loved to win over Spain. This is why we came here tonight.”

But, it was allocated as an objective after intercession from VAR, more to distress among the Moroccan substitutes and players, from whom a few stormed the pitch in protest.

Spain coach Fernando Hierro said in a statement that, “Until the last minute, we weren’t sure who was going to finish first and second. And I have to say we were lucky to finish first. Obviously we can prove. Five goals in three matches, that is not the way forward. That is what I have told my players, and they understand that.”
