Two From Two, Milan Are Back On Track

Over the weekend Milan continued their push for the Scudetto with a deserving two nil victory over minnows Cesena.

In truth, had it not been for some poor finishing it could have been more as the Rossoneri dominated possession and create numerous opportunities. But, in the end two goals was enough to avenge the defeat at the hands of the Sea Horses earlier in the season. More importantly, with the three points Milan were able to maintain their four point advantage at the top of the table.

In the absence of Mathieu Flamini, Andrea Pirlo and Kevin Prince Boateng, Thiago Silva was for the first time given a central defensive midfield role and he put in a stellar performance. With his ability to recover the ball, the Brazilian protected Milan’s central defensive pairing well and managed to move the ball about well too. Given his performance, Thiago Silva should remain an option for Allegri in midfield.

Milan were unfortunate to lose Alessandro Nesta so early in the match and it appears that the Italian will be out for some time now. But his replacement, Sokratis, put in his best shift in a Milan shirt. Alongside the young Greek,  Mario Yepes also put on his best display since joining the club, helping the Rossoneri to remain tight at the back and making it hard for Cesena to create openings.

Ignazio Abate put in another solid display at right back. The winger turned full back is now showing some consistency suggesting that his development into a full back continues. With the club having just signed Urby Emmanuelson who will play at left back, things are looking much better in an area of the field that has been problematic for Milan for sometime now.

Further up the field, the attacking trio of Antonio Cassano, Robinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were again effective and entertaining too. With their fluent passing and movement chances were easily created and on another day Milan would have scored many more goals.

The work rate of Robinho was again remarkable. Since joining the club, the Selecao star seems a different player, one willing to work for the team. If he continues to play in this fashion, the trequartista role is his.

The presence of Alexander Merkel gave Milan a certain look of vitality in the midfield.  Energetic and determined, the young German has what it takes to become a regular for the club. Against Cesena, it was another good shift from Merkel, building upon his impressive display against Bari last week.

It is now two from two for Allegri’s side who have played some beautiful football whilst keeping two clean sheets. The team has definitely turned the corner and with it the club’s push for honours is back on track.
