Sampdoria 2-2 Udinese: Samp goes through on Penalties

Federico Macheda scored his 1st Sampdoria goal as Sampdoria were held 2-2 in extra time by Udinese, Samp managed to scrape through to the Quarter finals of the Coppa Italia via sudden death when Fernando Tissone showed some cheek with a chipped penalty down the middle.

Sampdoria started well and nearly took the lead after 5 minutes as Giampaolo Pazzini got in front of his marker but only could turn his header wide of the post. Sampdoria then took the lead after 32 minutes and it was the loan star Frederico Macheda who got the goal, he ran on to a Giampaolo Pazzini through ball and shook of his defender and hit a left foot shot which looped over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Udinese thought they equalised just 60 seconds later but it was disallowed for offside as Antonio Di Natale scored past Junior Da Costa. Di Natale was close to equalising just before half time as he was denied by Da Costa who fingertip his free kick over the bar.

Pazzini nearly doubled Sampdoria lead as he pounced on a defensive mistake by Cristian Zapata, but Giovanni Pasquale did enough to put Pazzini off as his effort was fired over the bar. Angelo Palombo then had his free kick spilled by Belardi in goal for Udinese but there was no one there to tap in the rebound. Giampaolo Pazzini thought he added a 2nd for Sampdoria when he sprung the offside trap from an Poli through ball only to flash his angle drive across the face goal. As Sampdoria was thinking of the next round of the Coppa Italia Udinese hit them we a goal in stoppage time, Mauricio Isla with the goal as he turned his marker a placed his effort past Da Costa in goal taking this game into extra time.

Within 2 minutes of Extra time Udinese completed the turn around, German Denis was allowed to head home from point blank range from an Alexi Sanchez corner. There was clearly some tension in the Sampdoria ranks and it showed as Daniele Dessena was sent off for sarcastically applauding the referee. Pazzini then was really unlucky as his free kick clipped the cross bar. But with 11 minutes of extra time Sampdoria got back into the game as the referee pointed to the spot. A clumsy Pasquale challenge on Poli and Pazzini stepped up to send Belardi the wrong way. In the final minute of extra time Udinese had a free kick on the edge of the D, Alexis Sanchez whistled the free kick just past the post sending the game into penalties.

Both sides had a 100% record from the spot until Reto Zielger stepped up and ballooned his attempt over the bar. German Denis had the chance to send Udinese through to the next round, but was denied by Da Costa who parried his penalty. Pazzini then took the penalties to sudden death as he confidently scored his. Da Costa then saved Isla attempt which left Fernando Tissone to score from the spot. He held his nerve with a clever chip past the keeper to send Sampdoria into the next round of the Coppa Italia on where they will play AC Milan.
