Sampdoria 0-0 Juventus: Stalemate in Genoa

A return to Genoa for manager Gigi Del Neri after leaving Sampdoria for Juventus in the summer.

Both teams wasted chances toward the end of the match but and had to accept the 0-0 draw result. Even the 1 point came with a cost as both sides suffered additional injuries.

Things didn’t start well for Juventus as Armand Traore hobbled off after 2 minutes with a muscular problem, he would be replaced by Fabio Grosso.

Sampdoria also had to make an early change to Pietro Accardi when Stefano Lucchini fractured his cheekbone in a collision with Amauri. Juventus then had the first real opportunity at goal on the 30 minute mark off an Alberto Aquilani corner.  Leonardo Bonucci’s attempted header was well saved by Curci in goal.

Before the match the situation at Juventus was not something to brag about with a MIA list which included newly arrived striker Luca Toni, Leandro Rinauldo, Paolo De Cegile, Vincenzo Iaquinta and Fabio Quagliarella  while Felipe Melo remained suspended.

Thank God for the return of Amauri to the starting XI although he was wearing a protective mask after suffering a fracture to his nose. Alessandro Del Piero was only fit for the bench after suffering from a bout of flu. For Sampdoria they were missing the services off Franco Semioli, Francesco Padalino and Daniele Gastaldello, there were some good news as they gave Federico Macheda his 1st Serie A start.

A lack lustre first half leads to an end of game scramble

After the restart Sampdoria should have scored, Giampaolo Pazzini with the glaring miss.

Pietro Accardi crossed for Pazzini but he could on fire wide from seven yards out. Alex Del Piero then came off the bench after 55 minutes replacing the ineffectual Milos Krasic. Sampdoria then had a penalty appeal turn down when Giorgio Chiellini shoulder charge on Macheda went unnoticed.

Sampdoria picked up more injury woes as striker Pazzini limped off with an ankle injury courtesy of Chiellini. His replacement, Nicola Pozzi, then came off 10 minutes later with a thigh injury.

Alex Del Piero then went close to breaking the deadlock. After going on a mazy run his angle drive was well save by Curci.

Final Moments

In the final minutes of the game Juventus were bombarding the Sampdoria back line as Amauri and then Del Piero wasting golden chances. In injury time Sampdoria suffered again with an injury and it was Massimo Volta who appeared to fracture his cheekbone.
