Lazio 1-0 Sampdoria: Kozak with Late Winner for Lazio

A late goal from Libor Kozak gave Lazio a much needed win and retaining them a third  place position. After last week’s win over Roma, Sampdoria were back on form with their late deserved win, while on the other hand Lazio were on the slide after a shock home defeat at home to Lecce.

Going into the game Lazio were missing Mourad Meghni, Javier Garrido, Francelino Matuzalem, Tommaso Rocchi and the suspended Giuseppe Biava.

For Sampdoria both their centre-backs in Daniele Gastaldello and Stefano Lucchini were suspended while Franco Semioli, Luciano Zauri and Marco Padalino all injured, were missing from the lineup.

The opening 60 seconds would see Giampaolo Pazzini’s effort deflected over the bar for a corner by Mobido Diakite. At the opposite end Cristian Brocchi was denied by Gianluca Curci as the keeper rushed off his line, cutting the angle to deny Lazio man time and options.

Curci would go on to denied playmaker Hernanes as he parried his shot outside the post for a corner. Curci then denied Hernanes again as a Hernanes free kick was brilliant finger tipped away for a Lazio corner.

Samp had the first attempt after the interval when Pazzini squandered a chance feed by Angelo Palombo. The elastic Palombo serviced a lovely ball to Pazzini, which the Samp hitman ended up firing over the bar from close range. Mauro Zarate would continue the bad closing form, wasting his chance, in deciding not to pass to an unmarked Cristian Brocchi and instead drilling the inside of the upright.

Inside the final 20 minutes  our homeboy Frederico Macheda, newly arrive from England’s Manchester United, came off the bench to replace Nicola Pozzi. And with 7 minutes to go the hosts would grab the winner from Libor Kozlak. Kozlak himself a substitute earlier for striker Flocarri timed his run and nodded in the freekick distributed by Lazio’s Ledesma.

There were suspicions of offside on the play yet a very tight decision in tight quarters.  During goal celebrations Kozlak’s shirt was ripped open and had to be replaced, perhaps showing how excited his teammates were at retaining their point advantage over rivals Roma.

Lazio, still sitting third are back in the hunt with 4 points separating them from AC Milan and the summit of  Serie A.

an aside - AC Milan unable to retain their early lead against Lecce had to settle for an away point when Lecce’s Olivera scored the equalizer with 8 minutes of regular time remaining.
