The Return Of Adrian Mutu

The return of Adrian Mutu has come at the right time for Fiorentina; on a slight downturn, Sinisa Mihajlovic under increasing pressure and La Viola’s strike force faltering. But the controversial Romanian has come into the side and scored his first goal since his return from a drugs ban against Cagliari.

After enduring what must have been a horrible year by anyone’s standards, being lumbered with a huge fine after failing a drugs test with Chelsea, and now it is being reported the London club want the striker to sell his houses to pay the debt, following breach of contract.

Earlier this year he lost his final appeal and was ordered to pay the €17 Million by a Swiss court. He has yet to make any payment.

Then he failed another drugs test, this time it was sibutramine, an appetite suppressant. He was then given a lengthy ban, from which he has recently returned and has looked extremely sharp considering.

Following the goal and ‘man of the match’ performance against Cagliari, the Fiorentina ace thanked fans for their support during the previous year.

“I thank the fans for supporting me during and after my suspension,” he said to Sky Italia

“It’s the best day for me in 2010. One of the few happy ones, this unlucky time is over.

“Against Cagliari it was difficult, we knew it wouldn’t be simple, but the wins are more beautiful when you sweat for them,” continued the 31-year-old.

“Gilardino? When he returns from injury he will resume his usual post. He is the best.”

He has been given tremendous support not just by the fans but also by his manager who played him at the earliest opportunity.

And following a passionate embrace after scoring the winning goal against Cagliari on the weekend, Mihajlovic was more than complimentary.

“The hug is a symbolic gesture, that he embraces all the players and staff,” the Serbian said.

“He’s a smart guy, he understood that in difficult moments we never abandoned him and was eager to repay us. The embrace humours us, we hope to continue like this.”

We all hope Mutu can get back to his best and lead Fiorentina further up the table, 2010 hasn’t been the best for him and lets hope he has an excellent 2011.

No more silly drugs bans and fighting with waiters. We want goals and assists. Well, at least that’s what the Fiorentina faithful are hoping for.

and if his playing career comes to an end prematurely there is always the prospect of a fight against Audley Harrison judging by the mess he made of that waiter’s face!
