Serie A Matchday 16 Preview: Sunday’s Fixtures

Bologna - Milan

The home side have the best defensive record at home in Serie A and they come up against a free scoring Rossoneri outfit with enough attacking talent to unlock the meanest of defences. A midweek victory over Chievo has renewed confidence at the Renato Dall’Ara amid all the off field uncertainty. Milan though were rocked in midweek after the announcement that Thiago Silva will be out for 4-6 months.

Lecce - Chievo

The Salentini are a team who are looking to be in deep trouble. Four defeats on the trot has left them in the relegation zone and their once formidable home form has deserted them. Times are tough at Lecce, Souleymane Diamoutene had the shirt ripped off his back by ultras who stormed the training groun last week, so tensions are high at the Via Del Mare. Cheivo though are a team who can never e discounted. A magnificent comeback against Roma last weekend was followed by a midweek defeat to Bologna, though they were beaten by a last minute goal.

Brescia - Sampdoria

Brescia welcome new coach Mario Beretta to the Stadio Rigamonti after he replaced Giuseppe Iachini this week. Some good performances have not been matched but the results and it seems if Alessandro Diamanti doesn’t shine, then neither do Brescia. Sampdoria may be a little distracted by the Cassano saga as five players will be giving their accounts as witnesses to the row been the player and club president. Let’s hope Mimmo Di Carlo can keep the squad focused on the task at hand as they look to build on a good win against Bari last weekend.

Cagliari - Catania

The battle of the Islands. Following last weekends defeat Catania will be looking to bounce back against the Roberto Donadoni’s team. The former Napoli boss has done very well since his appointment in Sardinia winning two from three in Serie A, though they will be without Simon Laner and the suspended Davide Astori. Catania have been poor away from home this season and will be looking to buck that trend in Sardinia.

Juventus - Lazio

The biggest clash of the weekend by far at the Stadio Olimpico in Torino. It’s second versus third, two teams who harbour Scudetto hope and are in great form. But should one lose then they may find a charge for the title out of reach. One issue could be the injury to Stefan Radu coupled with that of Javier Garrido, meaning youngster Luis Cavanda filling in at left-back and his opponent… none other than one man Juve show Milos Krasic. Lazio better watch out!

Roma - Bari

Three games without a win for Claudio Ranieri’s men and on field arguments haven’t been good viewing for Romanistas everywhere. But Bari are in even worse plight following 10 games and no win. Rooted to the bottom of Serie A and with no win at the Stadio Olimpico for over 20 years, the money wont be placed on the away side that’s for sure.

Inter P-P Cesena

This match is postponed due to Inters involvement in the World Club Cup and has been rescheduled for 19th January 2011
