Lecce Left Reeling After Chevanton’s Five Game Ban

Javier Chevanton, Lecce’s Uruguayan striker has been given a five match ban by the Italian football federation after his sending off against Sampdoria last weekend. Firstly, lets take a look at the case for the prosecution.  37 minutes into the first-half of last Sunday’s game, Chevanton went down inside the visitors penalty area in what looked like a clear foul, the referee, Gabriele Gava, waved away the players frantic appeals and play continued. Moments later Chevanton lunged into a tackle on former Lecce favourite Guido Marilungo, referee Gava deemed this to be serious foul play and produced a red card. In his frustration, Chevanton threw his shirt to the ground in front of the match official and then stormed off the field.

Following the referees match report, the authorities decided to slap a five game ban on the little striker, something which seems to have astonished club President Pierandrea Semeraro. “We expected a ban of course but not one of this proportion” were the comments uttered by the patron on Tuesday afternoon when news of the sanctions were revealed, “we will certainly challenge the decision“ were his conclusions. Salentini coach Luigi De Canio, then waded in with his response to the ban imposed on his player “Chevanton has realised the error that he has made, but a five game suspension makes no sense as he only threw his shirt to the ground, a one game ban is what should have been received“.  Chevanton himself immediately informed the club’s official website of how sorry he was for letting his team down stating that “I am very sorry for leaving the squad with an inferior number of players but I do not think that the foul on Marilungo merited a red card“. He then issued a brief apology to match referee Gava, “I wish to express my regret to Signore Gava in regard to my actions following my sending off”

The full extent to which the club will miss their jack in a box goalscorer becomes a lot clearer when you examine the games in which he will be unavailable. Firstly, there is this weekend’s tricky trip to Sardinia to face Cagliari, on a high after the appointment of Roberto Donadoni and grabbing a vital three points against Brescia last weekend, then the Puglian’s entertain Genoa at the Stadio Via Del Mare, followed by another home fixture against Chievo.  Home form is so vital to the club’s Serie A survival with last Sunday’s reverse being their first defeat at the Via Del Mare this season. De Canio then takes his team to Napoli before the biggest game of the season - a Puglian derby on home soil against Bari. As it stands, Chevanton will not be available for selection until after the Christmas break and everyone concerned with the club will now have an anxious wait to see if the players suspension can be reduced.
