Juventus Are Back On The Right Road

Alessandro Del Piero reached another milestone at the weekend when he scored Juventus’ fourth goal against Lecce. The 2006 World Cup winner put away his 178th Serie A goal for Juve at match Giampiero Boniperti’s record. Plaudits must go to the striker but it is part of a wider story as Juventus seem to be improving week upon week and are genuinely looking competitive once more.

It seems Gigi Del Neri has gotten is ideas, his system and has installed a sense of organization to a team that floundered so poorly in the opening weeks of the season.

Giovanni Trapattoni thinks, “Gigi Del Neri has given them the right push and redirection. They are a team finding faith and enthusiasm and all will give their best. Juventus are as competitive as Inter.”

High praise indeed, though they may not be the winning machine Inter are just yet, they do possess some of Serie A’s top talents, most notably Milos Krasic, who according to the man himself is only 60% fit… imagine him when he is fully fit?

The Serbian has also come in for a little praise from former player Pavel Nedved, “He is a great player. Let’s leave him in peace,” the Czech star said.

There seems to be a confidence oozing from Turin, only last year Felipe Melo was being given the Bidone d’Oro – Golden Bin – for being the league’s worst player, now he is the rock around which La Vecchia Signora are building their side and he has found great foil in Liverpool flop Alberto Aquilani.

Currently on loan from Anfield, the midfielder has been in scintillating form in recent weeks and managed his first goal for Juve at the weekend, plus a standing ovation. Not bad for a player deemed surplus to requirements in England.

If he continues this form and Azzurri call will be just round the corner, provided he keeps himself fit.

However, there are tweaks needed especially in defence, “We’re looking for continuity which is always difficult for a side like ours which is still being built.

“Consistency represents a step up in quality for us. Yesterday we added substance to the good performances against Manchester City and Inter. Now we must keep going.” Those the words of defender Giorgio Chiellini.

Continuity in defence is a must, but Juve have a real lack of quality full-backs and as a result Del Neri is forced to chop and change his backline a little too often.

A top class striker is also needed, despite Amauri’s claim he will score 20 goals this year, he has never quite looked comfortable in the Bianconeri shirt, while Vincenzo Iaquinta and Fabio Quagliarella are less than convincing, thus leaving veteran and record breaker Alex Del Piero to pick up the slack.

Things are going well and I’m sure all Juventini will be hoping it can continue, maybe a Scudetto challenge isn’t out of the question just yet.
