AC Milan Light Up Serie A, As Inter, Juventus, Roma Stumble

So there we go, the waiting is over. The first round of Calcio is under our belt and it has already thrown up some interesting conundrums. AC Milan were they only member of the big four to win, the gap between teams appears to have closed leading to a host of competitive games, plus we have seen the Sebastian Giovinco let loose from his Juventus shackles.

The final game of the weekend was played at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara where Inter were visiting Bologna. As it turns out we might not have a Scudetto procession after all. The champions were lethargic and looked a yard off the pace, possibly due to Friday’s exploits in the European Super Cup. But hats off to Bologna, they were brilliant, especially Emiliano Viviano in goal, whose wonder saves earned his side a well deserved point.

It may only be one game old but the signs from Inter fans signal a lack of confidence in Rafa Benitez, there could be trouble brewing ahead for the Beneamata.

Their city rivals on the other hand are riding the crest of a wave, buoyed by the signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a former Inter hero, and a 4-0 thumping of Lecce with Pato proving he has overcome last season’s injury problems, accompanied by Ronaldinho who was mesmerising at worst, tearing the Lecce defence apart with every flick of his boot.

Coupled with the imminent arrival of Robinho, things indeed look very rosy and smell sweet at Milanello.

But things all went wrong for Juventus as they were beaten 1-0 by Bari. After a summer of optimism, rebuilding from top to bottom the Bianconeri still lacked that cutting edge and imagination, maybe a now departed Brazilian could have provided that? Who knows?

One thing is for sure Bari are no mugs and broke at every opportunity with lightening pace, Sergio Almiron was dominant in midfield alongside Massimo Donati who struck the winner, credit must also go to Edgar Alvarez who terrorised Paolo De Ceglie for 90 minutes, it is a shame the winger cannot play a decent final ball.

Last seasons runners-up, AS Roma also had a disappointing opening match. Most people would think a home tie against newly promoted Cesena was three guaranteed points… they would be wrong. As Jay Scardina wrote after the game, Cesena had Francesco Antonioli to thank for a series of wonderful saves that kept the Cavallucci Marini level. Some food for thought is needed by the tinkerman, who may have a few things to work on before the next match.

The big four failed to perform with the exception of Milan who given the big name arrivals are genuine Scudetto challengers and not also-rans as many predicted, but you cannot write Inter off, they have the strongest squad and a winning way, so discount them at your peril. For Juve, it seems we have the same old problems showing their head, but with the addition of a front man they should steadily improve and Roma, well… lets just call it a hiccup.

There were 3 games with goalless draws and Fiorentina and Napoli had a 1-1 draw. AC Milan looked strong, and Juventus did not look too good. However, there is still an entire season to go through.
