Algeria defeated their biggest rivals Egypt to pip them for a place at this summer’s World Cup in South Africa. Algeria have only previously played in the 1982 and 1986 Finals, but under Rabah Saadane, the nation has enjoyed somewhat of an development.

A fourth-placed finish at the African Cup of Nations six months ago was a notable achievement for Algeria, which was only soured by their elimination at the hands of Egypt. Saadane has consequently named a 25-man provisional squad that is predominantly made up by the same players from the Cup of Nations.

Faouzi Chaouchi had a particularly impressive Cup of Nations in goal for Algeria, but is more famous for his incredible head-butt on a referee that went unpunished. FIFA have subsequently banned him for the first two group matches, opening the door to Lounes Gaouaoui. Algeria’s apparent lack of discipline may be a concern to Saadane. Portsmouth’s Nadir Belhadj is one of his country’s best players, but is equally as short-tempered as Chaouchi.

Majid Bougherra of Rangers is an experienced defender charged with holding Algeria together at the back, possibility alongside the uncapped Djamel Mesbah of Lecce. Midfield creativity would have been provided by Lazio’s Mourad Meghni, but he has now been ruled out through injury. Wolfsburg’s Karim Ziani, Portsmouth’s Hassan Yebda, and uncapped Adlene Guedioura of Wolves will deputise in midfield. Siena striker Abdelkader Ghezzal will hope to put a disappointing club season behind him before the World Cup.

“The fact that we qualified for the World Cup is in itself a good thing, considering we’ve been absent for 24 years,” said the manager, Saadane. “We’re going to do everything we can to make the second round.”

Algeria have never progressed past the group stages in history, and they are big underdogs to do so this time around in South Africa, as they have been grouped with England, the USA, and Slovenia.

Algeria’s 25-man FIFA World Cup Provisional Squad: Fawzi Chaouchi (Entente Setif), Lounes Gaouaoui (ASO Chlef), Mbohi Rais Ouheb (Slavia Sofia), Mohamed Amine Zemmamouche (Mouloudia Algiers); Habib Belaid (Boulogne-sur-Mer), Nadir Belhadj (Portsmouth), Madjid Bougherra (Rangers), Rafik Halliche (Nacional), Abdelkader Laifaoui (Entente Setif), Carl Medjani (Ajaccio), Djamel Mesbah (Lecce), Anthar Yahia (VfL Bochum); Djamel Abdoun (Nantes), Riad Boudebouz (Sochaux), Adlane Guedioura (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Fouad Kadir (Valenciennes), Medhi Lacen (Racing Santander), Yazid Mansouri (FC Lorient), Mourad Meghni (Lazio), Hassan Yebda (Portsmouth), Karim Ziani (VfL Wolfsburg); Rafik Djebbour (AEK Athens), Abdelkader Ghezzal (Siena), Karim Matmour (Borussia Mönchengladbach/Germany), Rafik Saifi (Istres).
