Week 37 Review: Totti Double Ensures Tense Finish

Posted by Scot Munroe Wednesday, May 12, 2021

After the dismissal mid-week against Inter for kicking out at Mario Balotelli, Francesco Totti hit back at his critics by netting in two very crucial goals and ensuring Roma 3 points to take this title race down to the last day.

As the game was heading into the final 20 mins the away team shocked Roma when Andrea Lazzari daisy cutter free kick squeezed past Julio Sergio. Goal came against the run off play with Roma dominating the game. But with 12 minutes to go Totti answered the Roma prayers when he placed an angled drive past Lupatelli. The turnaround was completed after 83 mintues when a John Arne Riise cross struck the arm of Davide Biondini and up stepped Totti to tuck the penalty away. Cue the last day of the season.

7 goal thriller at the San Siro as the reigning champions Inter came up on top against Chievo. A game on which Inter needed to win to keep the 2 point lead over Roma. Thiago Motta would of wanted the ground to swallow him up after he gave Chievo a fantastic start when his own goal gave them the lead. Literally moments later Chievo gave Inter a gift with another own goal to make it 1-1. Inter then raced to a 3-1 lead at half time when Cambiasso and then a wonderful goal by Diego Milito who lobbed the Chievo keeper with 3 defenders around him. Mario Ballotelli then made it 4-1 when one on one lobbed Sorrentino. Chievo made a fist of it by grabbing 2 goals to make it a nervy finish when Granoche and then Pellissier made it interesting. Inter held out for the win and now go to Siena as favourites to clinch another title.

3rd place AC Milan travelled to Genoa and a last minute change made the game to be played behind close doors. AC Milan fans have not travelled to Genoa for 15 years since the sad stabbing of a Genoa fan outside the San Siro. The Crisis does deepen for Milan as Marco Rossi free header early in the 2nd half gave Genoa the 3 points. Also it didn't help as Matthieu Flamini was sent off 5 minutes from time. Big changes are needed at Milan next season.

Sampdoria are now in pole position to claim 4th spot after drawing at home to Palermo who were in 5th 1-1. Sampdoria are now 2 points ahead of Palermo. Whoever gets the 4th champions league spot out of these two teams would be brilliant for Serie A. Like in England someone else has broken into the top 4. This game was a tale of two penalties, Pazzini for Sampdoria and Miccoli for Palermo both converted.

With Bologna drawing 1-1 at home to Catania now both teams are safe and this relegated Atalanta. Both teams were 5 and 6 points clear from the relegation zone and draw was the favoured result. Marco Di Vaio and Maxi Lopez with the equaliser. Fiorentina season is ended as a low note as they drew 1-1 in a Tuscan derby, Vergassola with the opener for Siena and Marchionni with the the equaliser. Juventus like AC Milan need a big change around in the summer as they ended their season at home with a wimper losing 3-2 to Parma and now have to go through a preliminary round of the Europa league. Del Piero gave them a fantastic start but then they were pegged back by Davide Lanzafarme double and then Inter loanee Jonathan Biabiany made it 3-1, but deep into stoppage time Vicenzo Iaquinta give Juventus a glimmer of hope but to no avail.

The disgrace of Lazio last week at home to Inter but a week later then done them selves proud by saving them from relegation thanks to a comfortable 2-1 away win over already relegated Livorno. Tomaso Rocchi and Cristian Brocchi was the goal scorers for Lazio and Cristiano Lucarelli with the sole goal for Livorno. Napoli sadly relegated Atalanta and thanks to a brace from Fabio Quagliarella and secures Napoli Europa league football for next season. Goals goals with Udinese this season and against Bari it was a 6 goal thriller and Sergio Almiron equaliser deep into stoppage time. It does now look like Antonio Di Natale will win the golden boot in Serie A thanks to his double over the weekend.
