Roma 2-1 Inter: Ranieri Silences Critics With Win Against Mourinho

Posted by Scot Munroe Sunday, March 28, 2021

After the final whistle was blown last night in the capital, the sense of belief was there in the players and the coaching staff of Roma. Can Roma really pip Inter and win the Serie A Title? all these questions will be answered in the following 5 or 6 weeks. What a game yesterday evening between Roma and Inter and what a performance by Roma to shut up the Inter team and come away with 3 points. Ranieri started with the 4-3-1-2 formation which he has been using recently to some effect, with Jeremy Menez starting just behind Luca Toni and Mirko Vucinic. Menez has been a breath of fresh air in the last couple of games. Mourinho used the same formation 4-3-1-2 with Wesley Sneijder back after injury.

Over 70,000 fans were in attendance to watch at the stadio Olimpico. Roma started brightly as the two front man Vucinic and Toni linked-up but Toni could not get his shot away. Roma took the lead on the 15th Minute after Cassetti was fouled, Pizarro whipped in the free-kick a Burdisso knock down and Julio Cesar fumble gave De Rossi the chance to poke home. De Rossi celebrated by kissing his shin pad which has the picture of his daughter. Inter had the chances to hit back when 1st Sneijder free kick went wide and then Dejan Stankovic volley went well wide. Mirko Vucinic went close when his curling effort was deflected wide. Javier Zanetti was booked after fouling Jeremy Menez and now his amazing run off 162 league appearances in a row is now over after picking up his 6th yellow card of the season. Inter nearly equalised on the 42nd minute when a Walter Samuel header cracked the cross-bar from 5 yards out as Roma tried to scramble the ball away, Lucio drilled his effort wide. Inter had strong penalty shout just on half time when it looked like Cassetti fouled Sneijder inside the area but on closer inspection it was outside of the area.
Inter started the second half more brightly when Samuel Eto'o and Sneijder efforts on goal one over the bar and one denied brilliantly by Julio Sergio. Inter were cranking up the heat on Roma and Inter switched to a 4-2-1-3 formation with Pandev replacing the disappointing Stankovic. Luca Toni had the chance to double the lead when his header from a Pizarro free kick went over the bar from close range. Inter levelled in controversial fashion as 3 players were offside initially on the 1st through pass by Sneijder to Milito. But Milito eventually scored from a Sneijder cross, it was harsh on Roma. Inter Discipline let them down in this game badly as 7 players were booked for needless fouls. Menez was replaced by Taddei as Ranieri switched to a 4-4-2 formation. It clearly worked out when a cross come shot from Rodrigo Taddei fell to Luca Toni and he spun and finished pass Julio Cesar and celebrated with the players in front of the Curva Sud. De Rossi celebrated by hanging from the cross bar. De Rossi then limped off to be replaced by Matteo Brighi after a nasty challenge by Maicon on his shin. Roma then nearly added a 3rd on the counter attack but Luca Toni touch on goal let him down. Francesco Totti replaced Vucinic and was his 1st game in 6 weeks. Roma were denied a penalty when a chipped ball for Toni by Totti and Matteo Brighi pounced on the poor clearance to take it round Julio Cesar and was booked for diving. Replays clearly showed that Brighi was fouled by Cesar. In the 5 minutes of stoppage time, Christian Chivu was the 7th Inter play to be booked and was lucky not to be sent off for a stamp on Luca Toni. The former Roma players not endured by the home fans. As in the 94th Minute Inter had 1 last attempt on the Roma goal when a header was flicked on by Samuel to Diego Milito who then hit the post, Julio Sergio was beaten. A heart in mouth moment for all Roma fans and players.

As the final whistle went and the Roma song came on you saw a defeated Inter side walk of the pitch and with 4 players suspended for next week against Bolgona, can you see Roma capitalise on this and challenge to win the Scudetto. A fantastic result for Roma and for Ranieri as a coach to be sacked by Juventus and to take Roma to the top is something special.
