As we heard a few months ago, France manager Raymond Domenech said today that he would make Patrick Vieira the captain of the French National Team at the World Cup in South Africa.
But while the promise is out there, the main question is if Domenech will select Vieira at all. He said to L’Equipe that he would have a long list if he had to pick from players that have only played two matches. Still, he said that if Vieira continues to find a first-team spot on Manchester City and continues to show impressive play, he would be selected as the captain.
After a calf injury that he suffered before his transfer from Inter to Manchester City, Vieira has been seeing more playing time. He was brought on during the team’s match against Hull and started against Bolton. Sky Sports gave Vieira a 6 rating in the Hull game and a 7 rating in the Bolton game.
Still, Vieira seems to be the person to get the team on track. Manchester City teammate Kolo Touré said that Vieira’s leadership is exactly what the club needs to succeed in the FA Cup. “You need a winning mentality to bring a team success,” said Touré.
So, will he make it. I hope so, but we will see.
