Coppa Italia Preview: Inter Milan VS. Fiorentina

On Wednesday evening Inter Milan welcome Fiorentina to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza for the first leg of the semifinal in the Coppa Italia.

Both clubs are still battling on three fronts but their current shape in form couldn’t have been more different. The Nerazzurri are still wrecking havoc as they look set to collect their fifth consecutive Scudetto, whereas the Viola have slumped down to 11th place in the standings with 31 points from 21 games.

However, despite the varying conditions under which the two teams enter Wednesday night’s semifinal, the Coppa is the perfect setting to upset the bigger clubs.

Inter Milan

Despite showcasing a slight slump in form in the weeks following the winter break, Inter has recovered quickly and is still the indisputable force of Serie A. After brushing aside archrivals AC Milan in the Derby della Madonnina, the Nerazzurri overturned Alessandro Del Piero’s lead to defeat Juventus in the quarter finals of the Coppa Italia with 2-1 scoreline to secure their place in the next stage of the competition.

The performances have been mixed and at times far from dazzling, but José Mourinho’s men have almost always been able do what they set out to do – which is collecting the points. Despite having their fixture with Parma snowed off during the weekend, the Nerazzurri still have points separating them from the chasing pack.

Despite spending most of the current campaign perched on the top of the table, the Nerazzurri has showcased the kind of hunger and desire that has been a rare trait in their opponents thus far. Inter patron Massimo Moratti has set his eyes on the Treble and it’s safe to say that, at this point in the season, it is still a full possibility.

Fiorentina

Unlike their opponents, Fiorentina are yet to recover from their recent slump in form. Two defeats to Bologna and Palermo were followed up by a draw against Cagliari and somewhere in between, the Viola managed to defeat the current Coppa holders, SS Lazio by a 3-2 scoreline in order to book their spot in the semifinal.

The Viola has been making all the headlines lately, but for all the wrong reasons as Adrian Mutu is once again at the center of the stage. The Romanian – who has been the Viola’s top scorer in the Coppa with four goals to his name – has tested positive for the banned substance Sibutramine twice since Jan. 20 and could be suspended from the game for up to four years should the forward be found guilty. On top of that, the formerly harmonious squad at Cesare Prandelli’s disposal has lost some of its balance with departures such as Dario “Il Capitano” Dainelli.

Despite fighting on three fronts, it’s safe to say that Fiorentina are out of contention for the Scudetto. On top of that one should really consider the Viola’s chances in the Champions League with their double fixture with Bayern Munich looming closer. In other words, it seems that the Coppa may be their only genuine shot at silverware this season.
