Hmmm this one caught me off guard but I really shouldn’t be surprised as Juventus did not qualify for the final 16 of Champions League and from the player’s perspective it is time for Tiago Mendes to go.

The Portuguese midfielder resisted earlier attempts by the club to move him, most notably the full transfer to Monaco last season. Now it seems a short-term loan to Spanish side Atletico Madrid is acceptable most probably as this is a World Cup year and the player needs to be match ready and regularly starting, something which is not happening under manager Ferrara at Juventus.

FIFA.com - Atletico Madrid today signed Juventus midfielder Tiago on loan until the end of the season.

Tiago has passed a medical at the Vicente Calderon but the former Chelsea player will not be presented until Monday as he has returned to Italy for Juve’s clash with AC Milan.

The 28-year-old Portugal international becomes Atletico’s first signing this winter.

“Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement with Juventus for the temporary signing of the player Tiago Cardoso Mendes, with the option to buy,” read a statement on the Spanish club’s website.

“The midfielder will be presented by club president Enrique Cerezo on Monday.”

Tiago has made only 2 starting Serie A appearances in the Bianconeri jersey this season.
