We talk on Boca-River as the biggest rivalry in the world as well as other things regarding European soccer and South America.
After moving all the way up from 17th in their domestic league, and hanging in with the big boys of Europe until the Champions League Quarter-final stage (losing out to Arsenal on penalties), the season has taken it's toll on AS Roma.
Roma have been battling injury all season, causing members of the squad to play out of position, not to mention a series of reoccurring absenses in midfield by their talismanic #10 Francesco Totti. The Italian World Cup-winning footballer, European golden-boot winner and Roma all-time goalscorer has made only 18 appearance for the club this season.
Here's your chance to give us your opinion,

Fiorentina vs Roma (the fourth place challenge) ,
Milan vs Palermo (North meets South Again),
Bologna vs Genoa (a top four finish verse relegation survivalist)
(home team listed on the right for 2nd leg)
Fiorentina vs Roma (start time Saturday 25th 09 at 14:30 EST)
Fiorentina have underperformed this season if you consider the double-digit loss column but oddly enough they are very much in contention for next season's Champions League.
This says a lot about the present Serie A competition, making it harder to grid out consecutive 3 point victories, week in week out as top four-esque clubs. The Viola continue to miss Romanian international Adriano Mutu and Brazilian defender Felipe Melo. Good news is perhaps midfielder Riccardo Montolivo and defender Gianluca Comotto returning to the starting line up.
Juan Manuel Vargas will probably replace Zdravko Kuzmanovic in the attacking midfield position, joining Jovetic and Semioli behind lone striker Alberto Gilardino.
Roma can also reach fourth place, but a win in Florence is a must. Can they do it? I think so, because as I just said, Fiorentina are far from their best at the moment, yet I could say the same of Roma as they have only managed four away wins all season and are missing important pieces to their starting XI.
Defender Philippe Mexes is once again suspended and, his defensive partner Juan remains out however the biggest absence will be Roma keeper and Brazilian number-one Doni. The Roma defence will have to be sharp to cover the missing pieces that's for sure and young Pietro Pipolo will need to be keen to impress as Doni's stand-in, especially with the late scratch of team captain Francesco Totti placing even greater pressure on the depleted Roma defence.
No doubt there is value with the home win but I'm undecided with that 4th spot up for grabs,
prediction Draw
Milan vs Palermo (start time Sunday 26th 09 at 9:00 EST)
Top performance by Milan last week, at home to Torino, but the way I see it, they are too big a favourite for this one. Palermo are one of the strongest Serie A sides sitting just behind Roma in 7th place and their form is such that they cannot be underestimated. Two weeks ago the Southerners were 2 goals down to Inter in the same venue and pulled both back during the second 45 surprising our scudetto leaders Inter who had to settle for 1 point out of 3.
Beckham was back for Milan against Torino and he was definitely one of their best players, combining with Pippo Inzaghi in that 5-1 finish. It's likely to be the same Milan squad again this weekend. Palermo had no problems winning 4-1 against Bologna without their major-general Fabrizio Micoli. Maestro Miccoli is expected back this weekend as well as Nocerino and Bresciano. Palermo look to be at full strength ahead of their San Siro showdown and this writer is calling for,
over 2.5 goal result.
Bologna vs Genoa (start time Sunday 26th 09 at 9:00 EST)
New Bologna manager, Giuseppe Papadopulo, got the start last week but he could not change the negative trend for Bologna.
Their injury list is quite lengthy, and for this match they have to do without the suspended midfielder Sergio Volpi. It is likely that the home side will come with a 4-5-1 formation this time, with of their talsman Marco Di Vaio upfront. Di Vaio has retaken top spot in the scorers table, currently sharing the dias with Inter forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, both on 20 goals.
The homeside Genoa were surprisingly out of sync against Lazio and they deservedly lost 0-1 to the spirited visitors. It was their second home loss of the season. It looks like both Genoa scoring ace, Diego Milito and Milanetto will be back for this one. I'm sof the impression that Genoa will carry the day with the Genoa forwards intergrating back into the lineup.
prediction, Genoa 1-0.

This week has seen some controversy amongst the blogger/podcaster-sphere and I'm going to post up later the words of a fellow blogger closest to the action watch for it as we observe the Steven Cohen vs Chris Harris Debate
Flashback to March 3rd , away to Sampdoria in the first-leg, scudetto leaders (winners to be) Inter Milan were given a right beating when the 'Goal Twins' from Genoa Cassano and Pazzini, combined for all 3 goals to Inter 's NIL.
Yes it was game-set-match by the time the half time whistle blew as the Sampdorian war machine was in full gear already up by their 3, without breaking a sweat, against the mighty Inter Milan all-stars lead by maestro Mourinho.
Inter was so lethargic in the first leg that even after Sampdoria went down to 10 men for the final 30 minutes, with defender Daniele Gastaldello shown his second yellow, the Nerazzurri could not capitalize. Clearly the advantage for both Sampdoria and Lazio has been the Cup represents their best, if not only, hope of qualifying for Europe next season. Both Inter and Juventus should easily qualify, while Inter pretty much have Serie A wrapped up as well.
Inter coach Jose Mourinho has already admitted that his side have little chance of progressing on Thursday. "Three-nil is 3-0, it's very, very difficult. We'll try but it will be very difficult."
Late yesterday we learned one Italian giant Juventus, was not going to make the Coppa Italia final, after losing to underdogs Lazio in their 2nd leg semi-final match (whew). This was no surprise to me as Juve's form of late has fallen ever since the defeat to Chelsea during the final 16 of Champions League.
Moving to today's Coppa match the next obvious questions is,... could today's action mean the same for Internazionale? If it doesn't, then we are in for a high scoring match as the Nerazzurri need 4 goals to beat visitors Sampdoria to the final for their five consecutive appearance. I give it to Sampdoria 2-1, keeping it simple and following the same scoreline as today so bet the over amigos.
(In domestic play the Bianconeri have claimed 5 points in the last 4 Serie A matches and with all hopes of catching leaders Inter over, they have also slipped to third behind that other Milano outfit, AC Milan. )

Upon first discovery, the black and funky green colors immediately draw you in. The Inter leather upper analysis comes next, as you size up a variety of different textured material employed for stability, comfort, and ball-control enhancement.
The Nike5 T-3 CT weighs a mere 10.4 ounces and for someone like me who is wider in the forefoot, I appreciate the toe design. Some indoor and turf boots carry over a pointed toe molding from hard surface/outdoor boot designs and for those of us with broader feet the toe can feel pinched requiring you to either continue the search for a more forgiving boot in a less desirable design, or move up a full boot size for that swimming pool experience. In the Nike 5 T-3 neither option is required and you'll find added comfort under the balls of your feet with the high density midsole technology (Poron Performance Urethanes).
Boot Features
- Inter leather upper for comfort
- Molded EVA sockliner at midsole for heel cushioning
- Articulating turf studs for ultimate traction and flexibility
- Toe-Punt technology for increased ball control and shooting accuracy
- Enhanced off-set lacing for ball control and articulated studs.
- Suitable on hard surfaces or synthetic turf
You can find the Nike5 T-3 CT boots at SoccerPro.com who appropriately describe the 5 T-3's characteristics as,
"competitive-level technology crafted for the small sided player seeking the best in fit, traction, ball control and accuracy."
I hope you enjoy one of Nike's latest creations and for additional Nike soccer shoes check out the folks at Soccerpro.com
Serie A Match Day 32 Round Up: AC Milan Rises To The Top
Going down to 10 men in the 74th minute, with a straight red to Tiago Mende , things definitely looked dire for JUVE as the squad had already given up the opening goal, 10 minutes prior.
Inter attackers Sulley Muntari and Mario Balotelli combined with pace and positioning to score on the counter-attack in the 64th minute, catching the Juventus defense out of position. (see goal highlight video below)
Inter regained possession just outside their own box with Muntari receiving the ball from Ibrahimovic at midfield. The lanky Ghanaian continued play with a dash down the left flank, getting behind his defender, and crossed the ball to Balotelli who one-timed the shot beyond Gigi Buffon's reach.
Some wonderful goalkeeping by Gigi Buffon (and Julio Cesar) as Inter should have finished off their hosts by least 2 or 3 more goals but instead allowed Juventus to pull back the equalizer in extra time with a Grygera header past the disorganized Inter defence.
Additional News
To top it off, not only do Juventus lose a Champions League pole position, but also are hit with a "fan ban" after racism jeers were levelled against Inter forward Mario Balotelli. Balotelli, an Italy U21 international, born in Palermo to Ghanaian immigrants, has reported racist abuse from several sets of fans this season but the clubs in question have only received fines.

Former AC Milan and Azzurri manager Arrigo Sacchi had plenty to say facing Italian football to the relationship he has with those who once played under his guidance and now manage the most recent crop of superstars.
The once upon a time shoe salesman from Fusignano also discusses the demands of the UEFA Champions League compared to top-level European competition in his era saying it was very different "when we had to play Real Madrid in the second round". The Derby della Capitale 6 Goal Circus, Red Card Madness
Some questionable red cards during the Rome Derby, as the capital match would be chalked full of goals, 3 of 6 coming in the first 10 minutes.
Lazio took an early 2 goal lead after Goran Pandev and Mauro Zarate each found their mark, placing the ball behind keeper Doni. Roma defender Philippe Mexes pulled one back for the Giallorossi at the 10 minute mark and the remaining goals would all come during the second half.
From the opening whistle both sides treated fans to the usual scrappy performance often associated with this derby of derbies yet tempers really only started to flare at the halftime interval, as Roma manager Luciano Spalletti was sent off for a scuffle with Igli Tare. Spalletti accused the Lazio team manager of “threatening” him while speaking to referee Morganti.
During the second 45, the Giallorossi 's position would only worsen, as two of their back-four were also sent packing to join manager Spaletti. First off would be Christian Panucci for charging down a racing Lichtstiener. The pair came together after a shove by Panucci and referee Morganti wasted no time in giving the defender his marching orders. Next off for Roma was Mexes at the sideline area in the 75th minute and for what I'm still unsure, but this was the catalyst for all hell breaking loose as players, officials, and managers got into the act on and off the pitch. The Derby della Capitale would finish 4-2 with Lazio victorious but the goal tally was only half the story in this one.
Lazio forward Goran Pandev later accused Roma's players of “spoiling for a fight”
“It's a shame to see the tension that dominated this game, as we were both fired up and wanted to win, but that's the derby for you,” said Pandev.
Rumors started flying. He was spotted in the favela where he grew up. Had he gone on another weekend long bender of drugs and debauchery after a Brazil match, or worse had he been kidnapped? Was it really that he was depressed at the breakup of his relationship with his girlfriend over a party in which he had also invited an ex-girlfriend, other women and even some transgenders? Or was it simply that Dunga started rival Luis Fabiano up front and Adriano was angry at not playing?
The reaction however, was unexpected from Inter Milan. Jose Mourinho, who banished Crespo and Balotelli to the bench for less, was uncharacteristically supportive. The club offered their help. His girlfriend Joanna Machado added some interesting information. "Adriano is totally lost", she said, "but I no longer have the strength to deal with him.1" Not all that hard to read between the lines is it? This is a guy that she says, "likes to fly kites, walk in barefeet. There (in Vila Cruzeiro) he doesn't play the role of The Emperor."
Well, he'll soon get his wish I believe. Inter are more than willing to rescind his contract at the end of the year. He'll find work, if not in Europe then in Brazil again where his behavior will be tolerated more, but the damage has been done. A kid like him, he is still only 27 years old remarkably, will have plenty of chances until the power brokers decide that the risk is too great for the return and believe me that time has come and gone. 4 years ago in the build up to the World Cup in Germany he really was an Emperor for Brazil. Right now that Emperor looks like he has no clothes. written by: Mando
