Serie A Match Day 26 Fixtures

Posted by Kevin Walker Saturday, February 28, 2021
Several great matchups this weekend with Juventus vs Napoli, Inter vs. Roma and Palermo vs. Catania in the Derby di Sicilia

The Day After Champions League - Inter vs Roma

Posted by Kevin Walker Friday, February 27, 2021

Not much I want to say about Inter right now or Roma for that matter. It would have been nice to see the Italian sides make a strong start in the Champions League Final 16 on Wednesday, but it wasn't to be.

This is not to say it's over for the Nerazzurri or Giallorossi, or even the Bianconeri, after all both Roma and Juventus have home advantage for the return leg and since their English opponents couldn't finish their visitors off losing by a 1-goal deficit only, it's still game on.

Roma and Juventus have been known to turn things around on home turf, Roma's thrashing of Chelsea 3-1 at home during the last round is proof enough it can be done so don't rush to the bookies yet my boys.

However, one thing I will comment on that needs immediate attention by Roma manager Luciano Spalletti, and it's said a image says a thousand words...

Turning to Inter

Inter kept a clean sheet at the San Siro with their 0-0 result against Manchester United. And now, ManU short an away goal, will have to be very careful defensively went the clubs meet at Old Trafford in two weeks time. You can bet Mourinho will have his side pumped, no butterflies this time around.

BIG SERIE A MATCHUP - The Weekend Interlude

Inter vs Roma this weekend will have both sides looking for something to take them out of the punch-drunk state both are floundering in so perhaps will see a big score something like 2-3, or 3-1, which will hopefully wake both sides up so they can be heros come Final 16 LEG-2.

Arsenal vs Roma Live Final 16 Champions League Action

Posted by Kevin Walker Tuesday, February 24, 2021

Hello Serie A Weekly readers do you have your day planned around the Final 16 fixtures? Are you going try and catch all the action live at the pub between working hours? Of course all this will be played in the evening for our European brothers who can view all the excitement from home if they like but we mugs over the pond in America have to suffer or call in sick if we hope to see any of the action not on tape delay today.

Back in December I asked some other bloggers of the beautiful game several questions regarding this week's Champions League final 16.

1. Which final 16 pairing looks the most equally matched?

2. Three of the four English teams are paired with Italian clubs, do you see this as an advantage or disadvantage and to whom?

3. Who do you feel is the most influencial player absent from Champions League play because of injury, disqualification due to transfers or because of club elimination eg. (Gilardino)?

Two non-Champions League questions

4. and 5. Will Cristiano Ronaldo make the move to Real in the January window? and finally, will Beckham make his move permanent?

Marco Pantanella from mcalcio.com

Which pairing looks the most equally matched Marco? "I'd say it's a tie between Inter vs. Man Utd and Real Madrid vs. Liverpool. For the first one, it's Serie A champions vs. EPL champions, although the Red Devils have a big experience advantage: Inter have always disappointed in Europe recently. For the second match, despite all of Real's problems, they're still the team with most UCLs in history. And Liverpool, well we know how good their form in Europe is..."

Any advantage in the English vs Italy challenge on match day come February 24th? "Recent history says English teams always beat Italian teams in Europe. So... not looking good for us. With that said, trends are meant to be broken."

Regarding missing players give us your opinion "Uhm, potentially Michael Essien? Dunno if he'll be back on time in February, but he's big piece of Chelsea's midfield."

Do you think Ronaldo will make the move come January and what about Beckham's loan transfer will it become permanent at Milano? "Nah Ronaldo won't. If Beckham does, that will put the final nail in the coffin of a much-publicized and very-unsuccesful move to the MLS. Plus I don't think there'd be any space for him in Milan (Victoria will definitely like it though... it's the European capital of fashion, with Paris)."

Any Final thoughts Marco? "I can't wait for Chelsea vs. Juventus. Time for Ranieri to get some closure on Abramovich and kick his team's ass!!!"

Lonnie from championsleaguetalk.com

Which pairing looks the most equally matched Lonnie, "Well I'd have to say Roma - Arsenal, Villarreal - Panathinaikos and I think the Real -Liverpool series might be tight as well."

Any advantage in the English vs Italy challenge on match day? "I don't think there's an advantage or disadvantage to having three English teams match up with three Italian teams. Both leagues are strong, the teams involved are very good and the matchups are quite balanced. Chelsea and Arsenal are at a slight disadvantage but only because they have to play their second legs away from home."

Regarding missing players give us your opinion, "I would want to wait and see what happens prior to kick-off. There could be very many changes both to injured players and transfers before the fixtures take place. Right now, Torres' injury for Liverpool could hamper their chances. Another example, Bayern Munich have just brought in Landon Donavon on a short-term deal...he could add depth and allow Toni and Klose to stay fresh."

Will Cristiano Ronaldo make the move to Real in the January window? "Shocked if he does make the move. Who's going to want him if he is cup-tied? Will Manchester want to deal with Real Madrid or was Ferguson's quote in Marca the other day just BS? Ronaldo is not going to go anywhere in the January window. He'll be a summer transfer when and if he moves from United."

Finally, will Beckham make his move permanent? "I don't think so. I think that AC Milan are just using this as a wayto make up the revenue lost by not being in the Champions League this season. I wouldn't make him a permanent signing at his age, not at that level."

Mando from forzafutbol.com
  • "At first glance I'd say that Arsenal and AS Roma have similar strengths and surprisingly similar weaknesses."

  • "Quite obviously it's an advantage for the Italian teams. Juventus/Chelsea is a push talent-wise but Ranieri has the edge at Stamford Bridge. Mourinho has a great record against Ferguson and Spalletti, well his teams play well on the counter-attack and Arsenal are vulnerable."

  • "Right now, I think a guy like Yoann Gourcuff at Bordeaux who was highly influential, or maybe it's just that I like players that play in that position and play it well. Could be just me."

  • Will Cristiano Ronaldo make the move to Real in the January window? "No, this is just Real Madrid trying to destabilize a rival through it's contacts in the Spanish media. It's nothing new, just that Ferguson keeps falling into the same trap and it becomes a pissing match. In the end, the player will move, but it'll more likely be next Summer.."

  • What about Becks? "The American adventure isn't really taking off for them personally (I'm sure MLS is better off but are the Beckhams?) and I'm sure he and Victoria would love the attention in Milano but he really doesn't fit what Milan need. They need pace and width and he isn't really the sort to bringthat. It's not what he needs either, other than the oft-injured Borriello, do they have a target man to take advantage of hispin-point crosses? He'd have been better served at Juve."

George D. Metellus from Madaboutfutbol.com

"Inter vs. Man United because of the coaching matchup. Mourinho vs. Ferguson is more intriguing than any matchup on the pitch. Three of the four English teams are paired with Italian clubs but I see no advantage either way. The most influencial player(s) absent from Champions League play will be Diego from Werder Bremen, Fernando Cavenaghi at Bordeaux, and Andrei Arshavin playing for Zenit St. Petersburg. Ronaldo will not transfer in January but will make the move after the season. Cristiano wants to go to Real and he will before the beginning of the next La Liga season. Yes Beckham will make the move permanent, he misses Europe and his move to LA was about the money and trying to be a celebrity but to be relevant in sports you still have to perform on the field and he has not performed as the savior he was touted to be. Being a star on a soccer team in the U.S. is not nearly as glamorous as being 2nd string for AC Milan."

I'd like to thank the other bloggers for their opinions and I hope today's action is just what the doctor ordered enjoy everyone. - Special K

Palermo vs Juventus LIVE Second Half Action

Posted by Kevin Walker Saturday, February 21, 2021

Juventus has found a way through in the 27' on an absolute cracker from Momo Sisoko. At the end of the first half in the Stadio Barbera , Palermo 0-1 Juventus.

Yesterday Ranieri confirmed that his starting XI would include David Trezeguet, Giorgio Chiellini and Mauro Camoranesi and he has been good to his word will all returning from injury.

“We know what to expect, as Palermo have been playing well and beat us in our last two meetings. Last season [Mattia] Cassani’s prodigious strike came at the end of a game where we had deserved all three points.” said Claudio Raneri

Inter keeper Julio Cesar impresses during the first half against Bologna 02.21.09Its still goalless but has been a very physical game during the first 45 with some excellent defending by both squads.

Several key saves by the keepers especially Inter keeper Julio Cesar in the 38th minute against a charging Marco Di Vaio has kept this one all even at 0-0. Bologna's Zenoni was doing some great work down the right flank putting a floating cross in to Di Vaio but Cesar coming out to the edge of his box beat the league's top goalscorer to it with the punch out.

Mourinho has gone with the partnership of Ibrahimovic and Adriano with Stankovic coming on for Muntari at the half.

UPDATE - Internazionale wins!!! the visitors win a tough battle against Mihajlovic's Rossoblu 2-1 after Inter substitute Mario Balotelli scored the winner in the 82th minute.
Friday, 20 February 2021 14:12:07

APPIANO GENTILE (Inter.it) - José Mourinho has named a 21-player squad for Saturday afternoon's Serie A Week 25 match against Bologna (Stadio Renato Dall'Ara, kick-off 16:00):

Goalkeepers: 1 Francesco Toldo, 12 Julio Cesar, 22 Paolo Orlandoni.
Defenders: 2 Ivan Ramiro Cordoba, 6 Maxwell, 13 Maicon, 24 Nelson Rivas, 25 Walter Samuel, 39 Davide Santon.
Midfielders: 4 Javier Zanetti, 5 Dejan Stankovic, 7 Luis Figo, 14 Patrick Vieira, 19 Esteban Cambiasso, 20 Sulley Muntari, 33 Amantino Mancini, 36 Francesco Bolzoni.
Strikers: 8 Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 9 Julio Cruz, 10 Adriano, 45 Mario Balotelli.

Mourinho and Inter, where is the focus?

Don't be be surprise if you see Julio Cruz and Adriano start for Inter and Mancini making his way into the starting XI as Ibrahimovic sits on the bench this Saturday against Bologna. Newcomer Davide Santon has impressed especially after the Milan derby performance and he should be listed in the starting XI.

Sinisa Mihajlovic will have the advantage in more ways than one when facing off against his old club on his home turf in, Inter Challenge Part II. Earlier in the season Inter won the first encounter between clubs by a score of 2-1 and although Jose Mourinho is explaining he is putting Bologna first, you really have to doubt that claim. Mark one in the bookie's column for Bologna afterall the win over AC Milan gave Inter a 9 point lead atop Serie A and the approaching Champions League showdown against old nemesis Alex Ferguson is in less than 5 days, so I'd think winning over Manchester United at the San Siro next Tuesday takes prior.

"We have always done well against Milan or Roma or Juve but sometimes against small teams we are not the same. said Mourinho on MUTV, We have to be at our best if we want to win the tie so I am happy to have such a big team."

"Every team in Italy is strong defensively. Every game is about tactics."

The head to head definitely favors Inter with a record of 4-1-0 in the last five meetings however I'm of the opinion Bologna may just hold the visitors to a draw or even a snatch victory with a late goal from their league leading goalscorer Marco Di Vaio

2008 Ballon d’Or winner (European Footballer of the Year) Cristiano Ronaldo gives his point of view as he looks ahead to meeting FC Internazionale Milano in the first knockout round of the UEFA Champions League next week.

It is 44 years since they last lifted the European Champion Clubs' Cup and Ronaldo believes United's experience of winning the competition last season will give them the edge.

In the interview Ronaldo also talks about his experience at the international level, playing with other Portuguese all-stars and how it has benefited his game. "He believes he can do anything will the ball, and that confidence makes him very special indeed!" - Eusebio

Poll: Italy vs England: UEFA Champions League Last 16

Posted by Kevin Walker Tuesday, February 17, 2021
In less than a week the showdown begins between Italy and England in European football, with the starting fixtures of Match day 7 UEFA Champions League.

Roma and Inter are looking very strong at the moment, and it'll take full concentration on the part of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal and Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United to spoil an Italian wedding. After winning the derby of Milan on Sunday, the spotlight is brightly shining on Internazionale manager Jose Mourinho, hired specifically by Inter owner Massimo Moratti to turn domestic domination into European conquest. Mourinho will renew his old rivalry with Ferguson when the former Chelsea boss welcomes Sir Alex and United to Milan on 24 February to take on his new side, Internazionale.

The final encounter between Italy and England also pits former EPL manager Claudio Ranieri against his old club Chelsea. Poised to make his return to Stamford Bridge, Ranieri faces a Chelsea whose waning domestic performance and managerial substitution of Guus Hiddink could provide the advantage the Italian is looking for. It is true Ranieri was quoted in the press as being worried over Chelsea's sacking of Luiz Felipe Scolari, claiming all Juventus preparation has been planned around Scolari tactics.

With a current drought of goals in the English Premier League and the traditional top four of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Man United all stumbling, England finally have a chance this evening to watch what should be end to end top drawer football with the arrival of Serie A calcio to their shores.

That's right Italian football will be LIVE today on BBC3 for the first time all season. Once all the networks in Britain decided to drop Serie A coverage at the end of last season, the island's populous had been in hibernation, cocooning away their Sunday afternoons and missing what has been the most entertaining European football race of the 2008-2009 season.

Renewed interest in Serie A finally reached ears and eyes of glass towered TV execs in London with English football icon David Beckham playing in the red and black of AC Milan this winter. Even though Chelsea favorite Jose Mourinho has resided in the same city since the beginning of September, it took the introduction of the English International to kick the doors ajar at BBC studios and broaden the narrow minded focus of English Premier League Only viewing, even if it is for just one day.

If you still find it difficult to find this one on TV you can catch it online at, Inter vs Milan LIVE Second Half Action

Probable Starting XI

Inter: (4-3-1-2) Julio Cesar - Maicon, Samuel, Chivu, Santon - Zanetti, Cambiasso, Muntari - Stankovic - Ibrahimovic, Adriano.

Milan: (4-3-2-1) Abbiati - Zambrotta, Maldini, Kaladze, Jankulovski - Beckham, Pirlo, Ambrosini - Seedorf, Ronaldinho - Pato

I went to McDonalds today for my morning coffee and sitting down with the local newspaper was hoping to read about the world's biggest derby happening this weekend. Instead, I was greeted with news on, 'Beckham won't be staying in Milan' as L.A. Galaxy president Tim Leiweke closes transfer talks.

The article release was of course a knee-jerk reaction on the part of a North American daily lacking in European football expertise, and relying instead on wire services for page fill, when a derby story line would have been more entertaining. Susy Campanale of Channel4 Football Italia had the better angle on all of this with her 'Going Beck-wards' story, as Becks and company will have their focus on tomorrow's Derby della Madonnina.

Galaxy handlers have to settle down and wait it out until after the Milan derby for the serious offers to come through as this story ain't over by a longshot. It does Major League Soccer and L.A. Galaxy no good in attempting to force a settlement right now.

When an offer does come through for consideration, Beckham will probably have to give up some of his own bobbles to make it happen. It's clear AC Milan won't pay the Galaxy their total asking price during this financial crisis, as both parties take a hard line with the, "it's business only" approach and that is reasonable. Contrary to earlier comments made by Beckham as he expressed, his desire to stay at Milan, this will not be left up to clubs nor to lawyers but to David Beckham. If Beckham wants to make this move complete ultimately he will have to help make the financial settlement which will enable that final transition away from the Galaxy.

How troubling is all this to Diavolo fans?

How troubling is all this to Diavolo fans who are now warming to the Englishman and more importantly, how troubling to his new teammates? It was after all, only days prior the club was dealing with reports of a mythical offer by Manchester City, for their star playmaker and favorite son Kaka. That bit of reporting might just have disrupted some very important domestic league matches with all the attention creating unwanted tension in the dressing room. Now, this weekend, there are even higher stakes to consider as the Milan city derby takes center stage. It is highly unlikely Kaka will play due to injury so Beckham becomes even more important to a Milan lineup short of options in the midfield.

Onto the Derby

Inter versus Milan is one of the biggest games in European football. I've been looking forward to this and what else Serie A will have to offer in the coming month. With 85,000 cheering tifosi at the San Siro the Milan derby has a unique atmosphere found in only a few other venues.

When Inter and AC Milan meet tomorrow it will be the 270th encounter between the two city rivals a long way from that first encounter of 1908. Over the years there has been a repeated struggle for dominance by one club over the other yet overall head to head results are still split fairly equally with the slightest of advantage to AC Milan with a record of 106 wins, 72 draws and 91 loses to Internazionale.

This time round Inter manager Jose Mourinho and crew are looking for satifaction after losing the season opener 0-1 to a Ronaldinho finish. During that contest Inter defenders Burdisso and Materazzi would both receive red cards before the final whistle.

At the moment the Nerazzurri look to be the stronger side atop Serie A yet much is at stake in this year's final derby as the race for the scudetto could hinge on tomorrow's outcome. The current leaders have a 7 point advantage over second place Juventus but with their city rivals only a point behind Juventus, another loss to AC Milan would be like losing 6 points.

Italy Meets Brazil Today In London

Posted by Kevin Walker Tuesday, February 10, 2021

Kickoff for today's international friendly will be at 7:45 pm London time, and 2:45 pm on the east coast in North America as the Azzurri take on Brazil in a high profile friendly at the Emirates Stadium, the home of Arsenal

You can try catching all the LIVE action at ATDHE.net

Kaka will miss this encounter as well compatriot Amauri who received a late call-up from Brazilian manager Dunga but was blocked at the club level by Juventus, as was their right to do so.

Amauri's Juventus teammate Mauro Camoranesi travelled with the Italian side to London and will make a surprise appearance for the Azzurri. It is still unclear if Mauro will play today but good to see him back after injury and should he play, he will start along side Bayern's hitman Luca Toni and Villarreal's Giuseppe Rossi both set to feature.

Four time World Cup Champions Italy will be hoping for their first win over five time Champions Brazil since the 1982 World Cup Final.

Probable line ups are,

Italy: Buffon; Zambrotta, Legrottaglie, Cannavaro, Grosso; Perrotta, Pirlo, De Rossi; Camoranesi, Toni, Rossi

Brazil: Julio Cesar, Maicon, Juan, Lucio, Adriano, Felipe Melo, Gilberto Silva, Elano, Ronaldinho, Robinho, Pato

7 out of 11 of the starting eleven for Brazil currently play for Italian clubs.

Serie A Week 23: Best XI & Goal Highlights

Posted by Kevin Walker Monday, February 9, 2021

Another great week in Serie A and Goal.com have already finished compiling their team of the week for round 23 but check out the players who didn't make the final cut and are listed as a honorable mention,

Julio Cesar (Inter)Mathieu Flamini (Milan)Santos (Reggina)Luca Cigarini (Atalanta)Cristiano Doni (Atalanta)Giuseppe Mascara (Catania)Takayuki Morimoto (Catania)Momo Sissoko (Juventus)Amauri (Juventus)Alberto Gilardino (Fiorentina)Pasquale Foggia (Lazio)Francesco Totti (Roma)Marius Stankevicius (Sampdoria)Daniele Galloppa (Siena)Stefano Sorrentino (Chievo)Alexis Sanchez (Udinese)Fabrizio Miccoli (Palermo)

One important name absent entirely from both the star lineup and honorable mention is Marco Motta on loan to Roma from Udinese and the right back was simply fantastic in his debut for the capital club. Another player I'd have listed would be Dejan Stanković who worked his ass of for Inter and scored a great goal against Reggina. Finally, I know Bianconeri love their Buffon but the Frenchman Sebastien Frey was simply ahead above the rest for the Viola and should be given sole possession of keeper of the week with 3 one-on-one saves.

Each day this week fans in Canada will be given an opportunity to watch a replay from match day 23 on Fox Sports World don't miss them!

Beckham Expresses Desire To Stay

Posted by Kevin Walker Thursday, February 5, 2021
With the papers already printing stories on lawyer's attempts to prolong his stay in Italy, David Beckham publicly stated after the friendly Wednesday evening at the Ibrox, for the first time since joining the Rossoneri, his real desire to stay at AC Milan.

Beckham talks to the press on staying at AC Milan
"At the moment my lawyers are not talking to the Galaxy,” Beckham said continuing, “But I have expressed my desire to stay at A.C. Milan now, and it’s just down to Milan and Galaxy to come to an agreement. I have enjoyed my time here. I knew I would enjoy it but I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I have and do as well as I have.”

Final Score At The Ibrox
Rangers 2 - 2 AC Milan

It can be hard for English speaking readers even in this age of the world-wide-web, to discover what the foreign papers are saying about the beautiful game.

With stories of the Beckham-Galliani-Ancelotti love affair blossoming in Milan and Mourinho-Inter on the look out for new talent, lets take a look at what the leading sports papers in Italy are writing about.

Today's focus - Yesterday's Corriere dello Sport

Juve-Napoli: Moment of truth - The quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia and whoever wins bounces back
Inter: here is the mega attack - Ibrahimovic, Drogba, Aguero and Acquafresca
Cobolli Gigli: Ranieri will stay next year as well
Adebayor: I was paralysed until the age of four and a miracle cured me
Victoria Beckham: David loves Milan

Poll: Will Didier Drogba Make The Move To Inter?

Jose Mourinho would love to be reunited with Chelsea striker Drogba, who was one of his most trusted stars during his time at the Bridge.

There as been much talk amongst EPL pundits on the recent poor form at Chelsea with the club slipping to third in the standings and a potential free fall. Champions League action resumes later this month and things could get more embarrassing for last years finalists when they face Italian contenders Juventus.

At the beginning of the season it looked less likely Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich would allow any transfer of players to Inter and Mourinho, but after this week's loan move by the London side for Ricardo Quaresma, the deep freeze on relations is over.

In his 12 appearances for the Blues Drogba has scored only once this season. Under a renewed partnership with Mourinho I'm sure playing time would easily double as a regular first XI, helping the Ivory Coast international who Mourinho has indicated as a, very "special" player adaptable to his style, regain prior form. With the January transfer window now ended we'll have to wait until June to see if this move is in the cards but I'm of the opinion it is and the next question to ask would be... will Michael Essien join him?

Monday Morning Serie A News

Posted by Kevin Walker Monday, February 2, 2022
Good morning all you Serie A fans I thought I would share with you some articles from the footie pages which caught my attention this fine Monday morning:

Amauri's mum speaks out on
Dunga's true intentions, she feels it is purely a move by the Brazilian manager to deny Italy the Juventus striker and nothing more.

Kudos to David Beckham who received a
player rating of 7.5, the highest of the match. A Brilliant display by the Englishman in Milan's 3-0 victory over Lazio, Beckham was key to success with two wonderful assists to set up the first two goals. "When he joined us we expected him to do well but we didn't think he would do so well," Galliani said

Quaresma looks likely to make his EPL debut at Chelsea and not Tottenham as the papers report his arrival in London. The Portuguese was the worst purchase of the last transfer window and I'm wondering what Inter owner Moratti is thinking about this one? Mistake number x-1 by Mourinho.

Roma defender
Mexes was hospitalized for brawling early this morning. Rome-based radio station Rete Sport has claimed this morning that Roma centre-back Philippe Mexes was involved in a scuffle with a boxer last night. temper temper mon ami

A review of goal highlights in the Napoli - Udinese match.
When is Udinese going to win one? After falling behind 2-0 to the homeside, Udinese X-men Fabio Quagliarella and Antonio Di Natale both Neopolitan sons came to the rescue salvaging a point for the Northerners with the 2-2 draw. Don't miss Quagliarella's finish on the equalizer, it was a beauty.

Finally, it looks extremely likely David Beckham is set for a second tour at AC Milan. AC Milan administrator
Adriano Galliani will fight for Becks to stay after his loan period is up. We should hear more on this very soon as the end of the transfer window is quickly approaching, and it is impertitive both Beckham and Milan close the deal allowing the player continued play in topflight football.
