Mancini hired by Manchester City

Posted by Mando Monday, December 21, 2021

It's official. Manchester City, after months of speculation, have fired "Sparky" Hughes and replaced him with Roberto Mancini. It's a move that was coming, not just because City were inconsistent under Hughes, but because Mancini had made his intentions clear; he begged out of his contract with Inter recently opening the door for his return to coaching. Last month it was supposed to be Real Madrid that needed his services. Now we know better.

The reaction from the English press has been mixed. "In betraying Hughes, City have opted for quick results over lasting legacy... He has never succeeded in Europe...Roberto Mancini won't be better than Mark Hughes at Manchester City."

Ignore the English press, they protect their own and Mark Hughes played with and against the likes of Alan Hansen and Gary Linekar, just study the man's record. He won a double, scudetto and Coppa Italia, in his last year as a player and assistant to Sven Goren Ericksson. He took over at Fiorentina for Fatih Terim and won the Coppa d'Italia in his first few months in charge. He took over a cash-strapped Lazio and kept them competitive; never finishing less than sixth while in charge. After leaving for Inter, Lazio fell into the bottom half of the table with a horrendous run of form at home at the Stadio Olimpico. People talk of his time at Inter as a failure, losing close games in Europe and pointing to the three domestic titles being tainted by the Calciopoli scandal, but his successor at Inter, his Mourinho-ness has had less competition, a clearer path to European glory, and has accomplished less with more.

It will be tough for him at City, there are still many there (Roque Santa Cruz and Craig Bellamy) who owed their extended careers to the Welsh manager, but there are many more who will benefit from the change to a continental style manager. Robinho should get more freedom, Carlos Tevez should get more playing time, and the defense should be more organized. What Manchester City will be is better overall.
