Holiday Reading Recommendations for Italy

With the holiday season coming in fast I’d like to take some time to recommend my favorite books about Serie A.

  • Calcio by John Foot. A comprehensive history of the Italian game “from its origins in the 1890s to the present day. It takes us through a history of great players and teams, of style, passion and success, but also of violence, cynicism, catenaccio tactics and corruption.”
  • Italian Job, a journey to the heart of two footballing cultures by Gianluca Vialli and Gabrielle Marcotti. An exploration about the similarities and differences between the Italian and English games.
  • Forza Italia, a journey in search of Italy and its football by Paddy Agnew. Irish journalist Paddy Agnew went to Italy to search for adventure, sunshine and the soul of Italy and found them all in its football.
  • The Miracle of Castel di Sangro by Joe McGinnis. American novelist Joe McGinnis, author of Fatal Vision, who writes this account of a small club from Castel di Sangro, a tiny town in Italy’s poorest region, that against all expectations made it to the national competition.
  • A Season with Verona by Tim Parks. British author Parks follows the ultras of Hellas Verona and their casual vulgarity, racism and violence.
  • Football and fascism, the National Game under Mussolini by Simon Martin. A cultural history of Italian fascism under Mussolini as seen through the lens of soccer.

Order them soon. You’re time is running out.
