Madrid treble dreams go up in smoke at Alcorcón’s expense
After spending a the equivalent of the gross GDP of some small countries, Real Madrid were knocked out in embarrassing fashion by a team whose total budget is that of 1/94th of what was paid for Cristiano Ronaldo.
Despite knowing that they had to score five or more goals to advance, they weren’t able to score until Rafael Van der Vaart did so in the 82nd minute. Too little, too late for the Merengues as their Copa woes continue.
Madrid knew what they were up against and showed very little against Alcorcón side that knew what they were playing and what they had to do in order to obtain that result. As every minute passed, Madrid showed less and less ideas. They looked for some bit of individual genius by Kaká or maybe for Raúl to be illuminated, but on this night it was not to be.
Ruud Van Nistelrooy came close in the second half but would be rejected by the woodwork.
In the end the angry Madrid fans, in a sign of protest, gave the third division side a standing ovation.
