Italian Serie A Matchday 9 Preview

Posted by Kevin Walker Saturday, October 24, 2021

Lucky number 9 but for whom? AC Milan arrive off their biggest win this campaign after beating Real Madrid midweek in Champions League.
Will their form / luck carry over to Sunday's match when they meet the flying donkeys of Chievo Verona?

For manager Leonardo I hope so as Milan have won only once on the road in four attempts, with the sole victory stretching back to opening day against Siena. In that match it was young Brazilian Alexandre Pato who converted two for the visitors and the same will be required today as Chievo are a tough side to breakdown.

It was Pato who scored winning goals against Roma and Real Madrid (netting 2 against the Spaniards) in the last 2 outings, suggesting the Milan striker is returning to form. This change couldn't come at a better time for manager Leonardo. The Brazilian has had to bunkered down after inconsistent results, with Milan unable to string together back to back wins thus far this season. Suspended is Ambrosini and dangereous Chievo having lost their last match against Bari at home will be chopping at the bit for something from this one. Yepes, their Colombian defender, will be suspended for this match, with Mandelli deputised and Bogdani coming in for Granoche, joining Pelissier upfront.

Conditioning is going to be a factor for the visitors with the question being asked do they have enough in the tank after travelling to Madrid and the Bernabeu?

Prediction: Milan to not to lose although some pundits are suggesting the home win because of issues of fatigue, I'm of the opinion the midweek result against Real is what the doctor ordered to turn the corner. Lay Milan

Other notable matches and probably match of the day is,

Palermo vs Udinese

Palermo will miss their suspended Danish defender, Kjaer, yet his absence is pretty much their only problem. Di Natale could not play last week, but he is back in the lineup for Udinese this weekend. His upfront partner, Floro Flores, also returns from a suspension. It was a strange Udinese starting line up last week, without both their regular strikers, Di Natale and Floro Flores, and one has to say that their loss to Atalanta was not surprising being short in attack.

Udinese will probably be back to basics this matchday hoping to draw one on road as they travel south. Palermo will no doubt be looking for the home win all guns blazing.

Prediction: Although you can't discount Di Natale this season with the Naples man running away at the top of the scoring charts so early, I'm going with the homeside in this one not losing at home in four starts.
Palermo to win

Fiorentina vs Napoli

Big question is, has Walter Mazzarri had enough time to turn things around at Napoli? answer is... nope but owner Aurelio De Laurentiis is always seeking immediate results for his visitors in blue. The former Sampdoria manager will be on the hotseat to produce every match and this one against the Viola is no exception. This is only Mazzarri's second match at the helm, replacing Roberto Donadoni after the 1-2 loss to Roma on October 4th. Napoli were mostly lucky winning 2-1 against Bologna last week. The visitors will be missing defenders Cannavaro, Zuniga and Santacroce. The Napoli keeper De Sanctis is struggling with an injury and Iezzo is ready to sub in. Napoli will not gift wrap this one for Fiorentina so don't expect a walk over still the pre-match situation suggests home win.

Prediction: Fiorentina to win , possible Over 2.5 look for Jovetic (2.75) or Hamsik (3.75) to score
