On Sunday May 24th Captain Paolo Maldini will say goodbye to the Rossoneri supporters at the San Siro stadium, in his final match for AC Milan against capital rivals AS Roma. Two months ago Maldini announced that he will be finally retiring at the end of the 2008-09 season and on May 17th Maldini played his 900th match for the Rossoneri against Udinese.
This finale is not going to be a gentle affair as visitors Roma cannot afford to make it a meaningless encounter, with their European placing in the balance. With 2 matches to go in the 2008-09 Serie A season Roma are a mere 2-points ahead of Palermo in the race for sixth place while AC Milan require a win to maintain their 3 point lead over Juventus for an automatic birth in next season's Champions League. This match day should be a rock'em sock'em event between two traditional top four clubs and quite possibly one Maldini's most memorable appearances in the Milan jersey.
In other news Maldini has tipped Milan midfielder and playmaker Kaka to replace him as captain.
