Luca Toni’s strike just before half time allowed Fiorentina to keep up their slim hopes of a Champions League spot this season, but also condemned his former side Palermo, to relegation. The veteran Italian, keen to impress on a rare start, came close in the opening stages as a Juan Cuadrado cross was pushed away from him. However the Sicilian side had chances of their own before the opening goal, with Ezequiel Munoz and Jasmin Kurtic both missing good opportunities. […]

We are heading into my favourite part of the season, the crowning of the Scudetto winner. In Italian Serie A four games remain from season end but odds are leaders Juventus should wrap up the title when they meet relegation candidates Palermo come Sunday. At top of the table Juventus need but a one point from the encounter to secure the back to back Scudetti under coach Antonio Conte. And now the real race begins amongst the bottom end of […]

This weekend the two Sicilian sides face off against the two Rome clubs as Lazio host high flying Catania and Roma travel to struggling Palermo. The rivalry between the two Rome clubs is as fierce as ever and with both teams level on the same amount of points the gap between the sides is also as close as ever. This seemed unlikely not too long ago; however Roma’s resurgence in recent weeks after Zdenek Zeman’s sacking has coincided with a […]

A brace from Mario Balotelli propelled Milan back to winning ways after the disappointing midweek Champions League elimination. A first half penalty and a tap-in during the second period by Balotelli saw off a dogged Palermo outfit. It allowed the Rosseneri to continue their unbeaten run in Serie A to eleven games. For Palermo on the other hand, the prospect of relegation is becoming more and more of a reality. Their defeat to Milan was the fourteenth loss of the […]

Genoa home win over Palermo on Sunday night in the final round of matches in Serie A meant relegation for Lecce. Earlier in the day we said some emotional farewells in both of the Juventus and AC Milan matches. Alessandro Del Piero, Clarence Seedorf, Rino Gattuso, Alessandro Nesta, Gianluca Zambrotta and Pippo Inzaghi said the farewells and we saw a goal each from Alessandro Del Piero and Pippo Inzaghi in their last appearance in Serie A. Marco Di Vaio and […]

With Serie A rolling into the last match-day, we are settling into one more scrape for survival. Fiorentina officially achieved salvation with a 1-0 victory over Lecce  on Saturday. Novara and Cesena have officially been relegated and will see each other again in Serie B. Both Lecce and Genoa lost last week to Fiorentina and Udinese respectively, meaning there is still a three point gap between the two teams in seventeenth and eighteenth place. Lecce need to travel to Verona […]

It’s been three weeks of consistently talking about the third place in Serie A and now only one fixture remains. Before this weekend, it looked certain that Napoli would end up in the Champions League but after a horrendous loss at Bologna it is once again Udinese who are in the driver’s seat. Although Udinese sit in front, the other three teams are still nipping at their heels and one slip up could cause a complete reshuffling of the standings. […]

The title is heading back to Juventus. Inter Milan’s 4-2 win in the Milan derby, their second of the season, all but secured the title for the grand Old Lady who claimed all three points in Trieste against Cagliari with a two-nil victory. Juve have now 28 undisputed Italian league titles and 30 if you count the two that were revoked from them. Genoa imploded away at Udinese leaving them at risk of relegation on the final day. With their […]

Not winning a game since early February Genoa are finding themselves in a battle to survive the drop after their third defeat in seven days. On Sunday they lost away at Bologna and with Lecce losing as well, Genoa are one point above the relegation zone. A squad that was bought for European football could be playing Serie B football next season. Saturday 28th April There were three games on Saturday evening; there was a Sicilian derby on which Palermo […]

Saturday 28th April Roma v Napoli The game of the weekend is between two teams of contrasting fortunes. Roma have lost their last two games, a heavy 4-0 loss to Juventus in Turin and a 2-1 home reverse to Fiorentina. Napoli on the other hand, have beaten strugglers Lecce and Novara to move up to fourth. A huge game in the battle for third place, a Napoli win would leave Luis Enrique’s side with only Europa League football to play […]

With only four games left in the season, the teams at the bottom are making sure they are not in the drop zone come a month from now. Thus far only Cesena has been mathematically relegated thanks to their 1-0 defeat to Juventus on Wednesday. Novara will almost assuredly be the next team to be officially relegated, having to face Juventus at home on Sunday. So that leaves us with Lecce, who saw their six game undefeated streak come to […]

There was some idiotic scenes in the Genoa, as the home side -losing to Siena at the time -were demanded to take of their jerseys by their own ultras. The reasoning; according to this small minority of fans the players were not fit enough to wear the club’s colours. Marco Rossi, Genoa’s captain, ceded to their demands and went about collecting jerseys from his team-mates.  This left Genoa Giandomenico Mesto in tears on the pitch. To their credit, at least […]
