Napoli star Edinson Cavani could soon be heading to Manchester City but rumours suggest Paris Saint-Germain are ready to pounce with signs Juventus are lurking for a return of former Juve frontman Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

According to reports on the DailyMail, the Cavani deal has been considered by City manager Roberto Mancini who is desperate to make a splash this summer after seeing the current club title chances depreciated drastically when Manchester United scooped up EPL top goalscorer Robin van Persie from rivals Arsenal.

British Sports Press are having a field day talking up this potential player transfer with the Blues bid rumoured to be worth in the neighbourhood of £256k per week wages, with a remaining release clause thought to be £52-53 million.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has stated, “We included a very high buy-out clause in this contract, because we want him to stay.”

As yet, there has been no official statement from the Manchester club, but media following City have suggested an announcement could be made shortly confirming a trigging of Cavani’s buy-out clause.

A Cavani switch to the Eastlands club would no doubt be a boon for City’s attack. A dynamic and physical player with verifiable scoring credentials, Cavani is currently this season’s Serie A top scorer charting 23 goals from 30 games. The Napoli number seven has enjoyed a fantastic run of form not only in the goal department but also in assists, supporting his scoring partners Goran Pandev, and Marek Hamsik as the Napoli goal trident.

If the Uruguayan signs for Manchester City, the English club will have swayed the South American just enough to deter him from an immediate ultimate personal goal of playing in the white of Real Madrid in the near future. When speaking with La Repubblica Cavani has hinted he would be open to leaving his current club in the summer, “I’m fine in Naples, but in football there are lots of things to consider. I can only say that I will give my all in this shirt until the last day I wear it.”

Cavani has proved the difference time after time this season, threading passes and scoring goals that undoubtedly helped second place Napoli stay in scudetto contention and ultimately the hunt for next season’s Champions League spots which he himself knows is not decided yet, “We will do everything we can.”

Sport tickets site StubHub.com suggested that Manchester City could benefit from a player like Edinson Cavani in mounting a challenge for next season.

“Manchester City needs to strengthen its squad if it wants to compete for the Premiership next time around. Now that Balotelli has gone, the path has been cleared for the Cavani deal to proceed. With lightning pace, exceptional passing and a tireless work rate, Cavani could be just the change in attack Mancini needs to challenge at home and in Europe.”

The question remains as to whether City can now bring Edinson to Manchester, and help them mount a more serious Premiership title challenge next time around.
