Serie A January Transfer Review Part 3: Palermo to Udinese

Palermo

Swedish striker Agon Mehmeti was one of Palermo’s marquee signings in this window. The striker has been hailed as both the new Cavani and Ibrahimovic before signing from Malmo. Mehmeti was quick to quash such hyperbole insisting he isn’t Ibrahimovic and emphasised that his versatility by suggesting he could play anywhere along the front line. (+ve)

Franco Vazquez is a signing that has excited the Palermo fans. Parallels have been drawn with Javier Pastore, and Vazquez has admitted his best position is as a trequartista but also realises that he must get stuck in and says he can play wide as well in order to do what is best for the team. The 22-year-old has cost Palermo €4.5m. (+ve)

Milan Milanovic is a 20-year-old who was on loan at Siena but has now been recalled. He didn’t play any games in Tuscany.

Emiliano Viviano has moved to a club with too many goalkeepers, but has secured a 4 year deal and a first-team place. The 27-year-old ‘keeper had joined Inter in the summer but a cruciate injury and the consistency of Julio Cesar has forced the shot-stopper to move in search of games. Viviano will hope to try and win back a place in the Italian national team for Euro 2012. (+ve)

Bari midfielder Massimo Donati has arrived at the club at the personal request of coach Bortolo Mutti. The arrival of the 30-year-old was seen as the end of the road for Armin Bacinovic because Donati will be favoured by former the former Bari coach and fill the same role as Bacinovic. (-ve)

Young Chilean centre back, Carlos Labrin, has signed a 3-and-a-half year deal that takes him to 2016.

Out: Benussi (gk, Torino), Pinilla (a, Cagliari), Cetto (d, Lille), Di Matteo (d, Lecce), Simon (m, Bari)

Parma

Jonathan reluctantly joined Parma on loan from Inter. The 25-year-old right back had been seen as the heir to Maicon at the Milan club, but since his countryman’s return from injury Jonathan has been able to get into the first team. He may have to play as a wing-back under Roberto Donadoni, so it remains to be seen how this affects him tactically in the future. (+ve)

Stefan Okaka hasn’t been able to find goals at any of the clubs he has been to in the past couple of seasons. The 22-year-old has been pushed out at Roma by the influx of strikers under Luis Enrique. Okaka has European experience from when he played with Fulham in the Europa League, his spell at Bari last season proved to be lacklustre at best, though. (-ve)

Stefano Ferrario continues the exodus from Lecce. The 26-year-old centre back joins on loan after having played few games for the Apulian club since they made it to the top flight and has spent the majority of his career at clubs in the lower leagues - Como, Ternana and Ravenna. (-ve)

McDonald Mariga returns on loan to Parma 2 years after his departure. The Kenyan midfielder has rarely played in the last 3 seasons, and is now 25-years old. (-ve)

Out: Rubin (d, Bologna), Ze Eduardo (m, Empoli), Blasi (m, Lecce)

Roma

The rejuvenation of Roma’s ranks continued with the purchase of Urguayan striker Nicolas Lopez for around €2m. The 18-year-old arrives from Uruguayan side Nacional Montevideo and will receive a reported €200k salary. Walter Sabatini has indicated that he will start with the primavera squad before hopefully being integrated into the first team. (+ve)

Marco Antônio de Mattos Filho, better known as Marquinho, is a 25-year-old midfielder, a Brazilian title-winner with Fluminense in 2010, Roma’s new signing. The player has scored 23 goals in 170 games in Brazil. His fast feet and excellent dribbling skills make him a great central midfielder, able to skip through tackles and play incisive passes in the attacking third. He can also play as a full back - predominantly on the left. The move is a loan which cost a few hundred thousand Euro, with an option to purchase for somewhere in the region of €5m. (+ve)

Alexis Ferrante is an Buenos Aires-born Italian U17 striker who is just 16 years old from Piacenza.

Out: Borriello (a, Juventus), Okaka (a, Parma), Caprari (a, Pescara), Pizarro (m, Manchester City)

Siena

Luigi Giorgi, who signs from relegation rivals Novara, is a defensive right midfielder or right back. He made his name at Ascoli in Serie B and featured in Novara’s promotion push but has only played once this season. (-ve).

Francesco Esposito is a 17-year-old who has been brought in from amateur club A.S. Gracciano.

Erjon Bogdani scored some very important goals for Cesena last season, but the 34-year-old has only featured as a substitute in this campaign. Any form of composure in front of goal will be essential if Siena have any hopes of staying up, especially if Calaio and Destro are injured at some point. (-ve)

Out: Troianiello (m, Sassuolo), Milanovic (d, Palermo), Angella (d, Reggina)

Udinese

Michele Pazienza has joined Udinese on loan just 6 months after going to Juventus as a backup central midfielder. The loan should see Pazienza get lots of games in Udinese’s midfield. The player is evidently no longer happy to sit on the bench and is itching to play. He will be able to set the tempo from the centre of the Udinese midfield. (+ve)

Gelson Fernandes‘s career has slowed down tremendously over the past few seasons. The Swiss International is currently owned by Saint-Etienne and has been loaned out to Chievo, Leicester and now Udinese. Fernandes plays as a box-to-box midfielder, who plays with good energy and has excellent stamina. (+ve)

Czech forward Matej Vydra returns from a loan spell in Belgium with Club Bruges. 19-year-old only played 7 minutes in the Jupiler League.

Out: Doubai (m, Sochaux), Sissoko (m, Brest), Belardi (gk, Reggina)
